Paper Vazha Ela — literally “paper banana leaf” in Malayalam — is a green paper sheet cut and coloured to look like a section of banana leaf. It is used the way a fresh leaf is: laid across the table or over a plate, rice and curries served on top, then folded and thrown away when the meal is over.

You will see it called a few different things — paper banana leaf, paper vazha ela, paper vaazha ela, or simply a disposable banana leaf plate. They all describe the same product, and it is what most Malayali and South Indian families in the U.S. use for Onam Sadhya, Vishu, weddings, temple annadanam and housewarmings when fresh vazhayila is out of reach.

How to use a paper banana leaf

Wipe the leaf with a clean, slightly damp cloth before serving. Place it with the tip to the guest’s left, as with a fresh leaf. Serve dry items along the top edge and rice in the centre. The leaves are for serving, not for cooking — keep them away from open flame, ovens and microwaves.
